Emeritus Professor Arthur T Hatto
Emeritus Professor Arthur Hatto was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from SOAS in 1981. A former member of the Governing Body of the School, Professor Hatto delivered the Foundation Day Lecture in 1970.
An eminent Mediaevalist andscholar of German, Professor Hatto was educated at Dulwich College and King's College, London and received his MA from the University of London in 1934. He then lectured in English at the University of Bern, following which he took up a position asAssistant Lecturer in German at King's College. He joined what is now Queen Mary, University of London, staying there until 1977 as Professor of German Language and Literature.
Professor Hatto is renowned for many works including his translation of one of the main episodes of the epic Manas, which was the first piece of Kyrgnz - a branch of the Turkish linguistic group - oral literature to be recorded and translated into other languages. Professor Hatto is also the author of a number of other works, including essays on Mediaeval German and Other Poetry and The Memorial Feast for Kokotoy-Khan. Professor Hatto is also the translator of mediaeval works for the Penguin Classics series.
