Emeritus Professor C D Cowan CBE MA PHD
Emeritus Professor C D (Jeremy) Cowan was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from SOAS in recognition of his dedication to the School. From 1976 Professor Cowan was Director at SOAS for 13 years. His Directorship followed a career at the School which included the posts of Lecturer in the History of South East Asia and Professor of Oriental History. An expert in Asian studies, Professor Cowan is a prestigious author. Whilst Director at SOAS he had his portrait painted by Richard Stone, the royal portrait artist.
Beyond SOAS Professor Cowan has held many other academic and public posts. A long association with the University of London has included roles as Pro and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, as well as Chairman of Convocation. Professor Cowan has been Chairman of the External System of the University since 1993.
Professor Cowan has been Visiting Professor of South East Asian History at Cornell University and since 1990 has been Chairman of the Committee for South East Asian Studies at The British Academy. He has also served as Governor at four schools, including Dulwich College.
