John Clark is an Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow and Professor in the Department of Art History & Film at the University of Sydney. His talk will draw on his current research project, which seeks to investigate what constitutes modernity in Asian art, going beyond the Eurocentrism and trajectories of national identity that underlie most recent approaches to this question. He will discuss a number of Southeast Asian examples, from Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, with some reference to material from India, China and Japan.
