Series: Research Seminar in Islamic Art and Archaeology

A study of the representation of space in Islamic painting cannot be based on concepts borrowed from the pre-modern European art. An examination of Persian painting in terms of linear perspective does not work. I therefore propose to adopt certain ideas from modern and post-modern theories of literary criticism, especially Narratology, and to adapt them as useful methods for the analysis of our paintings. My presentation will start from a more traditional study of the relationship between the illustration, the text and the codex and will proceed to certain poetic devices employed by the painters.
