Kain gerinsing (double ikat), Tenganan, Bali.

Course Fee: £540

There has always existed a profound interest in all forms of Asian textiles and clothing, which fashioned an individual’s status and social identity. The international trade in textiles was more substantial than any other goods and significantly influenced indigenous design and production.

In this short course, the history and culture of Asia is explored through its textile traditions. The richly illustrated lectures reveal a wide diversity of hand crafted techniques and designs with veiled significance.

They cover the four main regions of Asia and examine textile traditions from the Middle Ages to the present day. Kashmir shawls from the Himalayan foothills of South Asia; embroidered suzanis from the deserts of Central Asia; decorated kimonos from East Asia, and royal batiks from Southeast Asia, are some of those textiles unfolded and revealed over the four days. Each day will end with an object study session focused on the textiles of one group or area from the region studied.

The course features:

  • Lectures by leading experts and curators
  • Object study sessions
