Sign-up For Courses to be Studied in 2012-13

New and returning students must sign up their courses for 2012/13 online.
Exceptions: Students taking the following courses will not be able to use the online system:

  • Exchange
  • Study Abroad
  • Associate
  • Graduate Diploma in Economics
  • School Certificate

Students on these courses will be given further guidance when they come to enrol.

How to signup for courses

Please consider your course selections carefully. Any changes will take some time to process and will result in delays with accessing BLE and attending tutorials.

Course choices will be made through the Student Allocator course signup tool.  An email will be sent to all students when the system is opened for use but at this point we envisage signup will occur as follows:
  • Returning UG students - Monday 3 September 2012.
  • New UG students - Tuesday 11 September 2012.
  • New and returning PG students - Monday 3 September 2012.

Help, I don’t know what courses to choose!

You should look on the relevant faculty/department webpages to find information about available course choices:  www.soas.ac.uk/academic

If you are unsure at any time about your course selections please contact the Faculty Office who will be able to tell you who to contact for academic advice.

What happens next?

Your Faculty Office will seek academic approval for your course choices, and all approved choices will appear on your Student Online Services account.  You will not need to seek any additional approval at this time, as choices will have been pre-checked to ensure they meet any requirements. Once you have completed your enrolment requirements and paid your fees, you will gain access to the BLE site, where your approved courses and relevant information about them will be visible.

Year abroad students

There is no requirement for students who will be abroad in the 2012/13 academic year to select their courses online. Students who are currently abroad, but are expected to return to SOAS in 2012/13, are asked to sign-up for courses online.

Changing a course

Prior to Faculty approval

If you need to change a course after it has been submitted online, but prior to the Faculty approving your selection, you will be able to change this by logging back into your account and removing and replacing the relevant courses.

After your Faculty has approved the course

The only way to change a course after they have been approved is to contact your Faculty Office. They will provide you with a form which you will need to complete and then obtain academic approval for the change.

The Small Print

Whilst SOAS cannot guarantee that all the courses offered during this sign-up period will be available in the 2012/13 session, every effort will be made to accommodate student choices, and the number of selections made to a particular course may be used to determine this availability. The information will also be used to inform the teaching timetable for 2012/13, although it may not be possible to guarantee that all student choices will be achievable due to the potential for clashes. Please check the online timetable in order to check whether any clashes will occur with your course selections.
