Developing an action plan

Developing an action plan helps you to understand what you need to do and when in order to progress in the career pathway you have chosen. It also helps to avoid a sense of regret over missed opportunities. Starting your planning early is, therefore, advisable. However, it is important to remain flexible in case your interests, aspirations or priorities change.

An action plan is simply a list of tasks you need to carry out in order to achieve a goal. One way to approach the compilation of this list is to start with key concepts and activities early on in your academic studies and work towards more specific activities as time goes on. It is important to set deadlines for all of the activities, so that you can monitor your progress and modify your plan if need be.

If you would like to discuss your plan with an adviser, you could arrange an appointment to speak with someone.
