Passing exams is one thing - but do you know how to prepare for a professional language test?
The International Committee of the Red Cross seeks to assist and protect the victims of armed conflict throughout the world. The ICRC is a popular choice for SOAS graduates who have studied the languages we need to carry out many of our operations. If you want to work for the ICRC as a linguist, you will have to pass our in-house language exam.
In the first seminar of its kind, the ICRC's head of language testing Trisha Bennett Mayer will discuss how the ICRC's language tests are carried out, the language level required, how to prepare for the test – and what you can do if you don't pass.
The session will be introduced by Liz Harris, who started her career in the ICRC as an Urdu linguist after graduating from SOAS in 2001. Liz will discuss the work of the ICRC and share her experiences of working for the world's oldest humanitarian agency.
If you would like to attend, please send your CV and a brief cover letter to careers@soas.ac.uk by 25th January with 'ICRC seminar' as the subject. Successful applicants will be asked to provide a £5 deposit, which will be returned on the day.
All are welcome to apply, however preference will be given to students of languages currently needed for the ICRC's operations, namely Arabic, Somali, Hindi/Urdu, Farsi, Hausa, Amharic, Burmese, Thai and Pashto.

This seminar will be filmed for training purposes
