Jean Derive is Professor Emeritus of the University of Savoie, and Research Director at the CNRS. He has worked on a wide variety of oral literary forms in francophone West Africa, examining both the genres, styles and forms, and the social and political contexts within which such forms operate. Among his more recent edited volumes are Paroles Nomades and Oralite Africaine et creation.
