FAQs

  • Can I use the material in presentations?

Providing there is no infringement of copyright regulations, there is no reason why you cannot use the material you have requested in presentations. This does not apply to uploading material to blog sites or web pages which is classed as publishing and therefore is against copyright regulations.

  • How do I submit my digitisation requests?

Send an email to cedaame@soas.ac.uk with the title, requisition number, page number(s) and brief description of what you would like to have digitised.

  • How long will it take to process a request for digitised material?

We aim to meet requests within 48 hours. This will depend on the size of the item: a volume of 300 pages will obviously take much longer than an article of 10 pages. Once the request has been received, and if it is accepted, someone will contact you with an estimate of how long it will take.

  • How much does it cost?

Charges are in line with current photocopying rates at 5 pence per page.

  • How will the material be made available?

Depending on the file size we can email your files, or save them onto your memory stick. For an extra charge we can provide files on cd.

  • What material can be requested for digitisation?

In theory you can make a request for any paper or manuscript item but this will depend on copyright regulations and a condition assessment of the item. It may prove too expensive or take too long to digitise very fragile material which needs conservation work before it can be scanned. We currently do not have the facilities to undertake digitisation of audio-visual material.

  • Where can I find funding for digitisation?

Some students with disabilities may be eligible for financial help for digitisation of material and should contact their Local Authority for details.

  • Where can I find sources of funding for large-scale digitisation projects?

JISC fund a large number of projects across 30 programmes. For further details see: http://www.jisc.ac.uk
The AHRC offers funding to projects as part of a number of different initiatives. For more information see:
    http://www.ahrc.ac.uk
Heritage Lottery also fund a wide range of projects of all different sizes, awards ranging from £3000 to over £5 million. More information can be found at:

It is also always worth having a look at charitable trusts, a directory of which can be found here: www.trustfinder.org.uk

It might also be possible to encourage corporate sponsors to fund digitisation.
