Computing Requirements
It is a requirement of our programmes that you must have access to a computer and a printer. You should also have at least intermittent access to the internet.
Access to a computer
We recognise that your circumstances and study preferences will determine how much you work from a computer. However, most CeDEP study guides are now provided electronically (USB stick) and we advise you to set aside time in your study schedule to make use of the electronic resources provided.
We advise students to have access to a PC (Windows) or Apple Mac (OSX) with at least the following capabilities:
- Internet connection and an up-to-date web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari
- DVD/CD drive
- access to email
- software that can read Word and PDF files
- in some instances, use of Microsoft Office programmes including Word and Excel.
Access to the internet
Access to email is essential for communication with the CeDEP team, tutors and supervisors. You will be provided with a SOAS email address at the start of your studies with CeDEP. Administrative information is disseminated only via email and you are expected to submit work electronically via CeDEP’s online learning environment.
We recommend that you plan to spend a reasonable amount of time using the internet so that you can take full advantage of CeDEP’s online learning environment and associated discussion groups, as well as browsing web pages and other references suggested in the module study guides.
However, you do not have to have broadband access to participate successfully in our programmes.
Access to printers
You will need access to a printer if you choose to print the study guide materials directly from the electronic-based courseware or from CeDEP’s online learning environment.
