Centres & Programmes Office: In-house volunteering scheme

The Centres & Programmes Office oversees the administration of 7 regional centres. We offer a number of internship opportunities to SOAS students wishing to assist in the day to day running of a regional centre. 

Volunteers are supervised by the Office Manager or Centre Chair and the hours are limited to a maximum of 3.5 hours a week. A reference will be supplied at the end of the internship.

The following list gives an overview of tasks that interns could be involved in.  The Centre is committed to matching tasks with the skills and interests of the intern, therefore improving student experience and employability.

Key Tasks

To help carry out the work of the regional centre, through the C&PO Manager and Centre Chair, with respect to:

  1. Produce information materials which are suitable for publication in print or on web.
  2. Attend and assist with event coordination on the day (registering guests, assisting/liaising with guests speaker, operating AV, networking, etc).
  3. Assist with the coordination and promotion of Centres web-based sound recordings.
  4. Help to identify and engage internal and external student societies.
  5. Contribute in compiling and maintaining membership lists on behalf of the Centre.
  6. Assist in promotion of the Centre / dissemination of its activities.
  7. Help develop the centres' social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
  8. Source copyright free images which can be used by the Centre.
  9. Produce high quality publicity in conjunction with C&PO staff.
  10. Assist in the planning, promotion and organisation of centres's events: weekly seminars, book launches, film screenings, conferences and lectures.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, Experience
  1. Studying at SOAS.
  2. Knowledge of, and an interest in, the region (of the Centre).
  3. Strong interpersonal skills.
  4. Work in an organised and methodical manner.
  5. Work as a team member.
  6. Competency in using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet and GoogleDocs.
  7. Knowledge of social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn
  8. Demonstrate a flexible approach to work.
