SOAS in the media 5 April 2013

This week Professor Jim Hoare has been featured extensively on the current situation in North Korea, including in BBC News Channel, BBC World Service, BBC 5 Live and the Guardian. The School of Law was also showcased through the work of Banyan: SOAS Advocates, covered in The Lawyer 2B, and also due to be covered in Guardian Education on Tuesday. Look out for Professor Gurharpal Singh on BBC Radio 4 this Saturday on Sikhism in Britain in relation to the ‘The Veerappan Four’.

This week Professor Costas Lapavitsas was interviewed on the financial crisis in Cyprus on CNBC and both Professor Charles Tripp and Professor Nadje Al-Ali have commented on issues surrounding 10 years after Iraq. Dr Phil Clark was also asked for comment on Bosco Ntanganda earlier this week.

SOAS in the media 15 March

This week Professor Gurharpal Singh’s appearance on ‘The Sikh Wedding Crashers’ was broadcast and he was quoted on BBC News on Sikh weddings. Professor Rachel Dwyer has been featured in The Guardian on Bollywood films in Bradford, and both Dr Mark Faulkner and Professor Paul Gifford have commented on news around papal candidates earlier this week. Professor Nadje Al-Ali’s appearance at last weekend’s WOW festival at London Southbank also received coverage.

This week Dr Laura Hammond commented on the Kenyan elections on Deutsche Welle Radio's AfricaLink on Air and Professor Gurharpal Singh has been interviewed by the BBC Asian Network on Sikh weddings and by BBC Radio 4 on Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

This week Dr Phil Clark has been quoted on roving courts in Eastern Congo, SOAS radio was featured in the Metro for World Radio Day and the New Zealand High Commissioner's speech at SOAS' Pacific Island Society was also covered.

SOAS student Kiran Flynn Undergraduate Wins Guardian International Development Journalism Award

Kiran Flynn, a second-year undergraduate history student at SOAS has won the award for best amateur article  in the Guardian’s International Development Journalism Competition. The story appears in a special supplement published by the Guardian today.

Sam Childers, the real-life inspiration for the new film Machine Gun Preacher, stopped by SOAS last week for an interview with SOAS Radio. He spoke with Professor Christopher Cramer, head of the Development Studies Department, about his lawless youth, his experiences in Africa and his ideas on the education and protection of future generations.

Dr Richard Keith Sprigg Remembering Dr Richard Keith Sprigg: 1922-2011

Dr Sprigg, a Reader in Phonetics at SOAS until his retirement in 1979, passed away on 8 September. He was 89.

Michel Hockx Professor of Chinese Michel Hockx Elected President of Chinese Studies Association

Professor Hockx will serve a three-year term as President of the British Association for Chinese Studies.
