An extended essay provides an opportunity for independent study or research separate from the ISP. Students will become familiar with reading primary literature and understanding theoretical and research methodologies.
Students wishing to take this option must contact the programme convenor and get their approval before enrolling. Students are then required to contact potential supervisors and submit to them a working title and a synopsis of 300-500 words of the proposed topic. It must not be assumed that all proposals will be automatically approved.
A total of 5 hours supervision will be offered throughout the term/year.
Scope and syllabus
A 5,000 word essay, requiring an orderly synthesis of material on any approved topic in Linguistics. Advice on selection of topic, background reading, preparation and organisation of the material will be given by the supervisor.
Method of assessment
One 5,000 word essay.
This is a term 1 course; therefore you should aim to submit your assignment by day 1 of term 2. The final deadline, after which you will be penalised for late submission, is Friday week 1, term 3.
Reading list to be decided by supervisor and student.
