This course provides a complete view of Japan's modern economic development. Part one involves a study of the long-run trends in the Japanese economic performance. Part two studies contemporary trends in a variety of topics including finance, industrial organisations, labour, international trade, population and agriculture.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Show a clear awareness of the Japanese history underpinning their economic development.
  2. Explain the long-term trends in Japanese economic performance.
  3. Identify and describe contemporary trends in the Japanese economy.

Method of assessment

Assessment weighting: Exam 80% / Coursework 20%. Resubmission of coursework regulations do not apply to this course.
