This course is concerned with the emergence in the Middle East between c.600 and c.900 of the distinct and complex religion of Islam. It includes such topics as the life and significance of the prophet Muhammad, the importance of the Arab conquest of the Middle East, the development of different sects and groups within Islam, and the spread of Islam among the non-Arab peoples. Some previous familiarity with the subject is expected of students.
