This course provides an outline of music in Korea. It divides court genres from folk genres, but also deals with contemporary composition and recent developments. Purely musical phenomena (eg outlining indigenous systems for notation and analysis) are dealt with from a historical and contemporary standpoint.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

By the end of the course students will have explored six themes within Korean music, using a broad range of available literature and other material, in both English and, where applicable, Korean. The themes chosen are of contemporary importance but vary from year to year to accommodate student interests. However, the themes will always involve developing comparative understandings by students of traditional and popular music, creativity and preservation, and music within the wider frame of popular culture evidenced in the Korean Wave (hallyu).
