The tradition chosen must normally follow in some logical way from the content of Performance 2 (which is normally a prerequisite), so that your final public recital represents the cumulation of two years or more of progress. Assessed by a public recital plus a portfolio of coursework. 

The portfolio may take the form of one or more of the following: 

  • an organological study, 
  • a musical analysis, 
  • a teaching package or pedagogical account,
  • or other work, 

the exact format to be agreed with the Sub-convenor. 


Performance 2 is normally a prerequisite.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

Performance 3 continues the practical training in an instrument or vocal tradition of Asia or Africa began in performance 2. performance is an integral part of training in ethnomusicology (as in other musicology courses), and provides both practical competence and insights into academic study.

Method of assessment

Exam 80% (performance & oral), portfolio (20%)

Its total length should be 3,000 words (or equivalent in other media). Students should keep a Learning Diary, which may be submitted as a supporting appendix to the portfolio.
