An in-depth study of the music of the Mande peoples of West Africa, focussing on Mali but also considering the wider cultural world of griots in neighbouring countries. Subjects include musical instruments, the griots and their repertoire, regional styles, hunters and wassoulou music, music and gender, and popular music since independence, as well as the significant role of Mande music and musicians in World Music.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course
The students will obtain an in-depth knowledge of the social context and role of Mande music in a broad geographical area.
