This is an advanced level course in the reading and understanding of contemporary Bengali texts. The course aims to give students the ability and confidence to tackle new material and to broaden their reading experience. The course is suitable for students who have completed Bengali Language 1 and 2 and for native-speaker students with equivalent language and literary skills. Students must be able to use a Bengali dictionary. The course will focus on reading, understanding and analysing a variety of texts, ranging from letters, articles and essays to drama, fiction and poetry. These will be looked at from a linguistic as well as a literary point of view. A reading list with recommended texts will be available, but students will also be encouraged to express their own interests within the framework of the course.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

By the end of the year students will be equipped to read and study Bengali texts independently.


Total of 22 weeks teaching, 3 hours per week

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (60%); one essay of 2,000 - 2,500 words to be submitted on day 1, week 1, term 2 (20%);  one essay of 2,000 - 2,500 words to be submitted on day 1, week 1, term 3 (20%).
