An Extended Essay is a 0.5 unit value course examined by the submission of one essay (in English) of 5,000 words on an approved topic in Korean studies of the student’s choice.
Procedure for Approval of Extended Essay Topic and Title, and Appointment of Supervisor
Students wishing to take this course are required to submit to the course convenor a working title and a synopsis of 300 to 500 words of the proposed topic of the Extended Essay as early as possible. Upon approval of the topic, the student will be appointed a supervisor. After consultation with their supervisor, students must complete and hand in the ISP / Extended Essay Registration Form to the Faculty Office by no later than the deadline for the submission of the course unit registration form (the last day of teaching week 2 of Term 1). The form is available from the Faculty Office.
Contact Hours of Supervision and Required Reading
Students are allowed a maximum of 5 contact hours of individual supervision for an Extended Essay, spread over the academic year. Required reading will be as directed by the supervisor.
Length and Preparation for Submission
- The length of an Extended Essay should be 5,000 words including footnotes, but excluding captions, bibliography, and appendices of original course materials.
- Extended Essays must be wordprocessed or typewritten, and include a bibliography of works cited.
- Two copies of the Extended Essay must be submitted.
- Students must attach the plagiarism declaration (see Undergraduate Handbook) to the front of one of the copies.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course
At the end of a course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out research using Korean language materials and provide an orderly synthesis of their findings.
