The course studies the development of Turkish literature from the late 1950s to the present day. Texts are studied both for their literary merit and for the light they shed on the attitudes and expectations of this era of considerable social and political change. Texts are chosen from all genres.

The major writers of contemporary Turkish literature are studied through a selection of their writings. The emergence of new styles of literature and the impact of this on a new generation of Turkish writers are also studied.

Prerequisites

Adequate level of Turkish to read literary works in the original.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

At the end of the course students will be able to:

  1. evaluate and analyse the intellectual history surrounding the development of modern Turkish literature from the 1950s onwards;
  2. apply a range of critical and theoretical approaches to the textual analysis and interpretation of specific texts from Turkish literature;
  3. analyse and interpret specific works of Turkish literature against the socio-historical and cultural context of the time in which the works were produced, as well as against present day academic contexts;
  4. evaluate the role of literature in Turkish society and culture;
  5. demonstrate critical insight into the formation of the literary canon both within the nation-state and post-national contexts.

Workload

The course is taught two hours per week.

Scope and syllabus

The major writers of contemporary Turkish literature are studied through a selection of their writings. The emergence of new styles of literature and the impact of this on a new generation of Turkish writers are also studied. 

Method of assessment

One written examination in May-June (80% of the final mark); two assessed essays of approximately 2500 words each, due on the last day of Term 2 and the first day of Term 3 respectively (together 20%)
