By the end of this course student should be able to appreciate the historical development of Swahili drama as a literary genre, and have acquired the skill of analysing Swahili plays. They should also be better able to appreciate the cultural context in which Swahili performance takes place.


Completion of year 2 of the BA Swahili degree programme.


Total of 10 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week. 2-3 of fieldwork will also be undertaken.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken at SOAS in May/June (50%), 1 essay of 1,500 words to be submitted to the Year Abroad Institution (30%) and one 15 minute oral exam taken at SOAS in May/June (20%).
