This course continues the teaching of primary texts from the third year classical unit (Chinese 304) but with more emphasis on the analytical element.
The course consists of three modules: 404C: Classical Chinese; 404L: Literary Chinese: Drama and Prose-writings; 404P: Novels and popular culture.

Prerequisites

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

At the end of the course students will have read and discussed sample writings in the original that have informed the Chinese philosophical and literary tradition as well as traditional popular culture. The introduction of the various styles of writing will also prepare students for further independent study. Students should be able to read traditional texts with some confidence and also be able to identify problematic passages. With access to a basic reference library they should be able to deal with the issues raised in these texts.

Workload

Total of 22 weeks teaching with 4 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination (100%) taken in May/June.
