The aim of the course is to give students an advanced command of writing, reading, speaking and listening in Bengali. It is a compulsory (Year 4) component of the new BA degree in Bengali and another subject. Because numbers for this programme are likely to be small, individualised teaching and tailor-made assessment also makes this course suitable for Year 3 students of South Asian Studies for whom Bengali is their chosen language, and for floaters who already have an appropriate knowledge of Bengali.

Prerequisites

Bengali Language 2 or equivalent.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

By the end of the course students will be able to read texts independently, write with reasonably accuracy, converse confidently and understand Bengali films, radio and television programmes.

Workload

Total of 22 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination paper taken in May/June (60%); one written essay/story in Bengali of approximately 500 words to be submitted on the day after reading week, term 1 (10%); a translation into English of a text of approximately 1000 words to be submitted on day 1, term 2 (10%); a 5-minute speech in Bengali to be delivered during the week before reading week term 2 (10%); a review in English of a Bengali film or TV programme to be submitted at the end of term 2 (10%).
