Prerequisites

"Urdu literacy" and "Hindi 2" or "Urdu 2", or heritage-speaker knowledge of Urdu and some familiarity with the writing system.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

By the end of the course, students will be able to think and write critically about Pakistan, its history, culture and politics. Students will be able to read Urdu writings about and produced in Pakistan to an intermediate level of competence with the aid of a dictionary. Students will also be able to deploy selected writings from and about Pakistan in support of their arguments.

Workload

Total of 22 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written paper taken in May/June 70%; 1 essay 3,000 words to be submitted on the last day of term 2 15%; class tests and homework 10%; seminar participation 5%
