The objective of the course is for students to acquire methods and skills in translation mainly from Korean into English. Different variety of modern Korean text-types (newspaper, magazine, and academic articles, essays, commercial material, and literary works) will be read and translated. Each week students will be assigned a set of texts or tasks which they will be required to prepare prior to each class. Some aspects of translation methodology and theory will also be discussed.

Prerequisites

High advanced level of Korean and subject to course convenor's approval.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

The objective of the course is to make students acquire advanced skills in translation mainly from Korean to English.  Translation skills from English to Korean will also be practised.  By the end of the course, the students should be able to translate a variety of text-types from Korean modern prose to modern Korean literary works

Workload

Total of 22 weeks with 2 hour classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (80%); one 5,000 word translation to be submitted on day 1, week 1, term 3 (20%).
