Prerequisites
No prior knowledge of Arabic is needed for this course. However student may not take this course and the course 155901202: Arabic 100 as they are both elementary Arabic language courses.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course
This is an introductory course to Qur’anic Arabic. It provides basic grounding in Arabic grammar and syntax and Qur’anic vocabulary. It will train students in reading, comprehension and writing simple Arabic sentences and passages with the help of a dictionary.
Workload
This course is taught over 22 weeks with 4 hours classroom contact per week.
Scope and syllabus
Teaching is principally based on the coursebook, Access to Qur’anic Arabic by Abdul Wahid Hamid, published by MELS (Revised Edition 2003) and ArabicThrough the Qur’an by Alan Jones, Islamic Texts Society, Cambridge 2005.
This course is compulsory for students of Year 1 of BA Islamic Studies
Method of assessment
One written examination taken in May/June 70%; one hour mid-term written language examination in term 1 (15%); one hour mid-term written language examination in term 2 (15%).
