Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to: 

  • understand, translate and write formal letters, business documents and give presentations in Chinese
  • use online Chinese sources effectively to enhance their knowledge and skills for business purposes
  • conduct business-related verbal (e.g. face-to-face, telephone) transactions

Workload

This course will be taught over 22 weeks with 4 hours classroom contact per week.  Two hours will be spent in a lecture and 2 hours in seminars/tutorials. 

Scope and syllabus

The syllabus will cover aspects of all languages skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation). The materials will be business- related and cover various aspects of finance, management and business.  This course has been designed to provide a good chance for BA students to enhance their understanding and knowledge of business related Chinese. It will enable students to make better use of Chinese language materials and enhance their core studies.

The teaching materials will be provided during the course. Students will be provided with specific vocabulary related to Business. The teaching will be conducted mainly in Chinese.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (50%); one oral examination of 10 minutes taken in May/June (20%); end of term 1 test (written and oral) (10%); end of term 2 test (written & oral) (10%); regular course work assignments throughout the year (10%).
