Module overview

The ISP in World Philosphies enables students to develop specialised knowledge in an approved topic or theme in World Philosophies. In the case of joint degrees it may act as a bridge between the two sides of the degree. The project is intended to enable students to engage in an extended piece of independent research on a topic of their choosing under the guidance of an academic supervisor. Students will learn how to design and implement research. Students are required to attend a compulsory weekly seminar that will provide training in basic research skills and provide a forum in which students may present their work and receive feedback from peers. The Independent Study Project is a compulsory component for all single and joint honour degrees in World Philosophies

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

Develop a comprehensive understanding of a core topic in World Philosophies;
Review and assess relevant philosophical and regionally focused literature;
Design, implement, and develop an extended piece of research under supervision;
Apply and combine empirical description with philososophical analysis and reasoning in relation to the topic in question;
Organise data and articulate arguments with clarity and precision.
