This half-unit course (Term One Only) offers a survey of the development, current status of, and prospects for, Chinese theatre, cinema and other media (journalism, television, internet etc.) in 'Cultural China', that is Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities.
The course will offer a cultural study of the most important works in the main media. Students will be trained in how to understand and interpret the cultural functions of the main media in China and overseas Chinese communities.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the course
The course is designed to help to lay the foundations for students who wish to learn about, or intend to embark on a career in, cultural media research, film production, and cultural exchange with Far Eastern countries.
The main objective of the course is to achieve a better understanding of the historical, political and cultural contexts of Chinese cinema and media production, distribution and consumption.
the course will provide:
- An introduction to the general contexts of Chinese media;
- a discussion of traditional Chinese theatre;
- an introduction to mainland Chinese cinema from the 1920s to the present;
- an introduction to key issues in post-war Hong Kong and Taiwan cinemas; an overview of Chinese television, print media and Internet use
Scope and syllabus
The course complements, in particular, the core course of MA Anthropology of Media (Comparative Media Studies) by offering greater detail on regional media production and consumption than is available in that course. It also complements MA Chinese Culture and Society by offering greater contextual detail about key areas of Chinese popular culture touched upon in that course.
