155901144:  Special Course in Chinese IV or equivalent competency in Chinese (with vocabulary of 1500 characters).  Students are required to have well balanced language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Each student’s language ability will be assessed by the course coordinator before students are accepted onto the course.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

At the end of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate . . .

  • an ability to understand, translate and write formal letters, business documents and give presentations in Chinese
  • an ability to use online Chinese sources effectively to enhance their knowledge and skills for business purposes


This course will be taught over 12 weeks with 2 hours classroom contact per week.

Scope and syllabus

The syllabus will cover aspects of all languages skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation). The materials will be business- related and cover various aspects of finance, management and business.  This 0.5 credit course has been designed as one of the Special Chinese courses which provides a good chance for MA students to enhance their understanding and knowledge of business related Chinese. It will enable students to make better use of Chinese language materials and enhance their core studies.

The teaching materials will be provided during the course. Students will be provided with specific vocabulary related to Business. The teaching will be conducted mainly in Chinese.

Method of assessment

One 2 hour written paper taken in May/June (60%); an oral examination in Chinese of 20-30 minutes duration (20%); 4 pieces of written homework (5% each(20%)).
