The purpose of this course is to introduce the students to the principles of General Linguistics through comparison of English and Arabic grammatical systems; also to review the place of Arabic within the Afro-Asiatic family and compare the sociolinguistic situation of Arabic and English.

Workload

A total of 11 weeks teaching with 2 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One two-hour written examination in May/June (70%); one essay of 2,500 words to be submitted on 1st May (20%); four data questions (10%).
