This is an advanced-level course on contemporary Hindi literature. It will acquaint students with thematically grouped works by some major 20th –century Hindi writers which will be further contextualised in terms of literary movements. Students will be introduced to both prose and poetry, and their studying of Hindi texts will be supplemented by reading primary and secondary material in English (translation). At the end of the course students will have sound knowledge of different genres and literary movements in Hindi literature and will be familiar with the work of important literary figures.

Prerequisites

Required level of Hindi language.

Workload

Total of 22 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.

 

 

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (70%); one 3,000 word essay to be submitted on the last day of term 1 (15%); one 3,000 word essay to be submitted on the last day of term 2 (15%).
