This course will be an in depth study of some of the key texts of Indonesian literature from the period of the 1960s-1980s. It develops an awareness and comprehension of the changes that occurred in the period of the New Order and an understanding of the main features of content, message and poetics of Indonesian literature in this period. The course will continue to develop written and oral skills of presentation. In particular to further develop skills in using primary textual sources to backup arguments and hypotheses. It will also further develop experience and knowledge of the various Indonesian bibliographic and other library resources.


A total of 11 weeks teaching with 2 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

A two hour written examination taken in May/June (60%); one essay of 4,000 words to be submitted on day 1, week 1, of the term following teaching (40%).
