  • Research skills through the completion of a long written assignment based on primary sources
  • Knowledge and understanding of approaches, methods and theories in the Study of Religions and Media Studies, with particular reference to the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
  • Skills in researching and writing about topics in religion and media in a global context with special reference to the non-Western world that requires a cross-disciplinary approach in examining religious and media practices.

Scope and syllabus

This is a 10,000 word research project on a topic linked into one of the courses in the Study of Religions or Media Studies on offer on the degree. The dissertation is normally written over the summer period and submitted in September. The dissertation provides the opportunity for individual research in one or more aspects of the mass mediation of religion or how religion is implicated in mass media production and content. Students are permitted to place greater weight upon one discipline or the other if they wish, provided that the dissertation offers evidence of recognition of the relevant issues in the other discipline. The two internal examiners will therefore be chosen one from each discipline. The nature of the topics permits either an element of field research or the use of multimedia elements or both.

Method of assessment

A 10,000 word dissertation must be submitted by 15 September (if 15 September falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then submission must be by 16:00 on the Monday immediately following 15 September).
