This research project is intended for students who wish to explore the areas of Buddhist Studies which are not fully covered in the courses on offer, or for students who have particular interests and wish to deepen their knowledge of specific theoretical issues, scriptures, practices, geographical regions, or schools. As far as possible, this research project must not explore general issues or theories, but must have a well-defined focus on one specific topic which should be dealt with in some depth. The project should be discussed with the convenor and the prospective supervisor, and approved by the external examiner. The guidance of up to five hours provided by the supervisor includes advice on research methodologies, basic advice on references, and discussing the structure and content of the project. The main purpose of this research project is to increase knowledge in specific areas of Buddhist Studies, and to enhance the skills in doing and writing up research.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

The primary outcome of this research project should be an acquisition of in-depth knowledge of the selected area of Buddhist studies. The students should also strengthen and further develop their research skills, critical and constructive thinking, and writing skills.

Method of assessment

Coursework: one 5,000 word researched study, one oral examination (30 minutes). Assessment: researched study 80%, oral examination 20%.
