Freedom of Information for Committee Secretaries

All SOAS committee secretaries are strongly recommended to attend this event, which will explain the implications of the Freedom of Information Act for committee work. Committee minutes are crucial corporate documents which are often the subject of FoI requests.

It is therefore important that committee secretaries understand:

  • What can (and cannot) be disclosed under FoI.
  • What is appropriate for open minutes and for reserved minutes; how minutes can structured to improve the transparency of decision making, and help the School to meet its FoI obligations.
  • Public access to committee minutes and the role of the FoI Publication Scheme.

The training will reinforce and expand on the existing guidance on FoI which is included in the guidance notes for committee secretaries.
