Freedom of Infomation - How the Law Affects You

Unit value:

Course Content

The Freedom of Information (FoI) Act is revolutionizing the way that HE institutions and other public authorities manage their information. By law, Freedom of Information requests can be sent to any member of staff, do not have to specifically described as FoI requests, and must be answered within a specified period. All SOAS staff therefore need to understand their obligations under the FoI Act.

This short briefing will provide staff with an overview of the legal requirements of Freedom of Information, focussing on how it impacts on day to day working practices. Topics covered will include: definitions, rights of the public and legal responsibilities of public authorities; recognizing and dealing with requests for information; implications for contractors and suppliers; the role of the Data Management Officer; SOAS's FoI Policy and FoI Staff Guide; records management; complaints, appeals and the role of the Information Commissioner. Some consideration will also be given to the Environmental Information Regulations, which have created similar rights in relation to information about the environment.

Learning outcomes

  • Participants will develop an effective understanding of the legal requirements of FoI and SOAS's FoI policies and procedures.
  • Participants will leave with the knowledge necessary to translate these requirements into their daily working practices.
