Copyright Uncovered: An Overview for SOAS Staff

Unit value:

Course Content

Copyright is all around us. All the information that staff create - and most of the information which staff use - is subject to copyright protection. This means that we need to be aware of copyright when we use other people's material, and aware of our own rights and SOAS's rights in terms of what we produce.

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of copyright issues, focussing on those which are most relevant to SOAS staff, particularly academic and Library staff.

It covers:

  • Key concepts and ideas: what is protected, what isn't protected, ownership, duration of copyright.
  • Copyright and research
  • Copyright and teaching
  • Licensing issues, the Library and the Bloomsbury Learning Environment
  • Copyright and student work
  • Copying for the disabled
  • Publishers, open-access repositories and protecting your copyright

This course is open to Staff from other Bloomsbury Colleges Institutions.

Learning outcomes

  • Participants will develop a basic understanding of the key copyright issues facing SOAS staff, particularly in their research and teaching.
  • Participants will leave with the knowledge necessary to translate these issues into their daily working practices.
