Staff Development

IOE Learning Technologies

Unit value:

The Institute of Education (IoE) have organised a number of events designed to deal with issues surrounding Virtual Learning Environments.

Unnoticed by most Blackboard users, Virtual Learning Environment has a global blog and wiki tool. Students and staff alike can easily create as many course-independent blogs and wikis as they wish and share them with others, thus effectively creating mini-e-portfolios and personal profile or presentation sites. In this taster session, we will demonstrate access and use of this simple but effective tool, which is another step towards empowering students.

Blackboard will be enhanced with the following functionalities:

Blogs

For individual learning journals, class reflections, or a simple time-line based presentation of group work.

Wikis

For individual or group websites, or collaborative documents or encyclopedias.

e-Portfolios

For complete student websites or online presentation of student work, where students are in full control of who has access to their portfolios.

All of these functions are fully integrated into the Blackboard user interface, and they have been designed for educational purposes. As a consequence, tutors can monitor student activity and use the new tools for evidence in the context of assessment.
