Module overview

Exams can account for up to 50% or more of assessment on some of SOAS modules, but do not always take a proportionate amount of time in preparation during the academic year.

This 4 week course aims to help students start to prepare well in advance for exams which usually come in May and June. Often students will find themselves disorientated and shocked close to exam time at the amount of work they have to catch up on or not know how to go about an exam answer.

This course is designed to help prepare early, identify the gaps in preparation thus far, understand what the demands of exams are and identify what types of question or content area may come up in your particular subject, learn strategies for timed writing and do a practice timed writing on a question of your choosing, adapted to the online take home exam done over 48hrs.

By the end of the course, students should have a study plan which will see them well prepared for the beginning of their exams. The course takes place in 2 hour classroom sessions over 4 weeks from the second half of term 2 (block 4).

Areas covered include:

  • identifying gaps in knowledge
  • approaches to reading, notetaking and organising notes
  • targeting topics and questions-reviewing past papers
  • making a study plan and revising
  • the type of essay exams require
  • timed writing practice
