Cultural Awareness
- Unit value:
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
- have a greater insight into what cultural awareness actually means.
- want to uphold and respect other people's cultures because that is important to them.
- be aware that it is important that SOAS is a place where being different is a positive thing and that they have a legal duty to make this happen.
A cultural awareness course will only work if it is credible for the staff who attends. With this in mind, I would want to achieve 3 simple things.
- To make everyone aware of the importance of his or her own cultural heritage.
- To ground this in legislation and good practice. It is something that SOAS would expect them to do as part of their jobs.
- To talk about different approaches to things that are familiar to each attendee. Birth, marriage, death, foods, and language are all things we share. But they mean different things to people from different cultural backgrounds.
