Digital and Traditional Broadcasting Communication

The course is designed to develop theoretical/ academic knowledge as well as practical skills in broadcasting communication. The taught element is designed to achieve both these aims. The sessions will be a mix of standard lecture format and skills workshops. Lectures will mix theory with detailed case studies in order to situate academic knowledge gained within a practice context.

Theory sessions will consist of lectures, but the practical sessions will be delivered in a one-hour tutorial per week where techniques will be demonstrated. Students will have an opportunity to practice techniques. Lectures will combine with training in the use of multimedia resources, and will access the SOAS Radio facilities.

One session, on designing a communication strategy, will link to the practical assessment (– the production of a podcast). As part of this, students will discuss their proposed projects and develop them in more detail to reflect the feedback they receive.

No pre-existing knowledge or experience is required; accommodation will be made wherever possible for students with disabilities on an individual basis

The topics will include:

  • Introduction to digital and broadcasting communication: what is it and why is it important?
  • Traditional broadcasting: understanding analogue communication. Radio and TV
  • Digital broadcasting: understanding online and mobile platforms for content delivery and communication (video, podcasts and webcasting technologies)
  • The media regulatory system in the UK
  • Trends in social media and digital communication technologies
  • Communication for development: the use of digital and traditional broadcasting in development
  • ICT’s and the use of mobile phones and the internet beyond broadcasting: interpersonal and mass communication
  • [Practical session] Designing a communication strategy
  • [Practical session] Using technology to produce media content
  • [Practical session] Presenting skills: journalism and live broadcasting
  • The Broadcasting and Media sector: an overview of media management

Objectives and learning outcomes of the course

At the end of the course, a student should be able to...

  • Have a good understanding of digital and traditional broadcasting in relation to their role in the creative and cultural industries
  • Have a good understanding of key issues in communication theory and practice
  • Have a good understanding of broadcasting regulatory systems
  • Have a good understanding of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) and their role in communication
  • Have a good understanding of different types of communication practices (their relative strengths and weaknesses)
  • Have a good understanding of the role communication in international development
  • Have developed practical broadcasting skills  
  • Have a good understanding of the role of creativity and innovation in communication
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of digital technologies as research and communication tools (digital literacy)

Method of assessment

Two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorials each week for ten weeks.
