Postgraduate Writing Workshop in History
The third-year research seminar is designed to provide a supportive and encouraging environment for History research students in the year after they have returned from fieldwork. The seminar meets every other week and is organised around the presentation and constructive criticism of dissertation chapters. The seminar is led by a full-time member of staff but is driven by the writing and discussion of the research students. Each student presents one chapter per term and also takes the lead in critiquing a fellow student's chapter. At the end of the year each student should therefore have presented and received feedback on two core chapters of their dissertation which together with the chapters they have drafted before going on fieldwork and therefore be well placed to submit a draft of their thesis to be considered for continuation status by the end of the following summer.
