Indonesian Film Screenings
Following on from the success of the 1st Indonesian Film Screening held at SOAS in March 2006, the Centre of South East Asian Studies at SOAS and the Centre for Media & Film Studies at SOAS, in co-operation with Wadah and The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in London, are pleased to announce a series of Indonesian film screenings in the first half of 2009.
Since its rebirth following the problems of the late 1990s, Indonesian film production has grown dramatically. In 2008, more than 90 films went on general release, and while of varying standards, several of those films have achieved critical acclaim both at home and abroad.
The films selected for this season of screenings do much to reflect the diversity of genre and subject interest of Indonesian cinema generally. While not all of the films selected for screening have attracted much attention overseas, they were all popular and/or controversial at home. As such the films present Indonesians in London with the opportunity to catch up on recent blockbusters and controversies, and for non-Indonesian this is a chance to see what Indonesians have enjoyed watching in recent years.
All screenings are free of charge and open to the public without reservation.
All the screenings start at 6pm and the individual event pages give details of the venue (either at SOAS the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, 38 Grosvenor Square, London, W1K 2HW).
