Speaker Biography

Ben Murtagh is Senior Lecturer in Indonesian and Malay at SOAS, University of London. He is joint managing editor of the journal Indonesia and the Malay World. Ben's main research interests are the cinema, literature and cultural history of Indonesia, with a particular focus on constructions of non-normative sexual identities in popular culture. His book, Genders and Sexualities in Indonesian Cinema: Constructing Gay, Lesbi and Waria Identities on Screen will be published by Routledge in Spring 2013.
