This paper discusses memories of slavery and the coffee trade on the Zege Peninsula in northern Ethiopia, from the perspective of changing relations between Church, land, and labour. I explore tensions between current narratives of coffee as a divine gift guarded by the Church, and stories of exploitation and abuse related to the production of the cash crop that have major repercussions on contemporary life.
