Now out in paperback, this book has been welcomed as one of the 'best studies on Chinese trade unions in recent years'. Pringle focuses on what Chinese unions do - rather than what they say they do. Case studies of 'best practice' are subjected to critical analysis contextualised by China's turbulent post-liberation labour history and the recent dramatic rise in strikes and protests. Pringle argues that while the reform of the All China Federation of Trade Unions remains slow and contested, the rising confidence and capacity of Chinese workers to fight for their collective interests has emerged as a key element in the future of labour and social movements in China - with implications way beyond the border.
