SOAS will hold a multidisciplinary training workshop on cross-cultural research over two sessions. These will be open to all SOAS staff and research students as well as our partners in the Bloomsbury Doctoral Training Centre. This is session 1. Session 2 is here.

All year 1 SOAS PhDs and supervisors of PhD students are very strongly advised to attend these sessions. Beginning this year, 2014, all MPhil/PhD upgrades will involve a compulsory and comprehensive ethics questionnaire which includes security and risk assessment.

This multidisciplinary workshop, led by expert security trainers Aegis Response, will be an introduction to core issues in preparing for and undertaking research in difficult and/or dangerous environments. It will cover basic security and risk assessment, focusing on the following four areas: pre-deployment (planning and preparation, self-sufficiency), security awareness (in country movement/travel and hotel/accommodation), focus on kidnap threat (incl. surviving captivity), and medical risks (prevention of diseases, hygiene).
